The Garmin Forerunner 230

The Garmin Forerunner 230

The 230 belongs to Garmin’s entry category of heart rate monitor watches. It is a well put together and feature rich watch which is ideal for runners looking to take their training to the next level. In our opinion it compares better to the likes of the TomTom Cardio Runner and Adidas SmartRun and unless you are planning to do an ironman/triathlon in the very near future, this is the best running watch you can currently get.

This Garmin watch is intended for recreational runners and occasional marathoners.

Summary of features;

  • Colorful graphic interface which shows your HR zones and beats per minute at a glance
  • Tracks distance, pace and heart rate
  • Built-in accelerometer records distance indoors
  • Connected features¹: automatic uploads to Garmin Connect™, live tracking, social media sharing
  • Compatible with advanced workouts and free training plans from Garmin Connect

The Garmin Forerunner 630

The Garmin Forerunner 630

The Garmin 620 series which was launched last year, took things to the next level and in this category Garmin still impress.

This Forerunner 620 boasts a touchscreen with a high-resolution colour display, which keeps you abreast of your progress in real time. The 620 wristwatch will assist you in obtaining your full potential. With a heart rate monitor, it collects key data to estimate your VO2 max (the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume in a minute, per KG of body weight at your max performance) although this calculation should be taken lightly and refer to a clinical V02 testing if you want the correct statistics.

Another superb feature is that it is capable to estimate your advised recovery time between runs and races, while also tracking your running form.

Summary of features;

  • Touchscreen GPS running watch with a high resolution colour display
  • Advanced running dynamics¹ include ground contact time balance, stride length and vertical ratio
  • Features stress score, performance condition and lactate threshold²
  • Connected features³: automatic uploads to Garmin Connect™, live tracking, audio prompts, smart notifications and social media sharing
  • Download data fields, watch faces, widgets and applications from Connect IQ™

The Polar M400

The Polar M400

The Polar Running Watches have a reputation as reliable, rugged and a great running companion. The Polar tracks steps, calories and your runs through GPS. It has a Smart Coaching feature which is great for getting a summary of how well you are doing.

The design is a bit chunky, so we don’t expect to see you wearing it at the office or on your first date. A microUSB charging port makes it super easy to charge your watch anywhere. The relatively low price is why we chose to recommend this watch, not that it is not a good running watch !

TomTom Runner 2

The TomTom Runner 2

The TomTom Runner 2 comes with in-built heart rate monitor. It works without the need for a chest strap due to innovative sensors that track the flow of blood in the wrist.

It also comes in Multi Sport form for those of you who want to go beyond running. The TomTom Runner Cardio combines the company’s GPS skills with an industry leading heartrate monitor. It’s also waterproof to 50m, making it the perfect sportwatch for swimmers.

This is another excellent buy in our opinion. The only downside is that a lot of reviewers complain about a slow GPS locking which can be frustrating.
